LU Arts offers current students and recent graduates opportunities of Loughborough University to gain experience of working in an arts environment through volunteering and casual employment.
We regularly employ students as apprentices to the contemporary artists working with us, and in roles ranging from box office to marketing to assist with the organisation and running of our events. There are also opportunities to get involved in all aspects of our work and gain a wide range of experience through one of our paid internships.
One of our most exciting opportunities allows current students to gain valuable experience in programming, marketing, and organising events by applying to be our Speech Bubble Co-ordinators. These co-ordinators are responsible for delivering two sessions of our popular performance poetry night Speech Bubble. This means seeking out and inviting both professional poets and students to perform, securing a venue for the events, working with a technical crew on sound and lighting design, working with a designer on printed publicity materials, and promoting the event through a range of channels including social media.
Our current Speech Bubble Co-ordinators are being mentored by Steve Carroll, an experienced performer and event programmer who previously worked for the celebrated performance poetry organisation Apples and Snakes, and Dr Kerry Featherstone, poet and lecturer in English here at Loughborough University. They are also fully supported by LU Arts wherever necessary, and receive a £500 fee for their time and effort.
