Happy Mondays: Weaving workshop with Georgina Barney

Mon 22 October, 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Venue: Loughborough Students' Union, Cogs

Book Tickets

Artist Georgina Barney will guide you through the process of weaving on an entry-level frame loom, creating your own weave to take home. The wool used for this workshop will have been dyed using plants foraged from the University's Fruit Route on campus - see below for more information on how to get involved in this process.

During the workshop you will explore the unexpected beauty and surprising outcomes of plant dyeing and gain a practical insight into the complex ethical questions surrounding sustainability in relation to clothing and fabric production.

This is the second part of a two-part workshop. The first part will take place on Saturday 20 October from 11.45am and will include a walk of the Fruit Route on campus with Georgina Barney and Anne-Marie Culhane, foraging for plant materials which will be used to create dye baths and to dye the wool which will be used in this workshop. The first part is a free event but must be booked separately: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/plant-dyeing-and-fruit-route-walk-tickets-50903219901?aff=eac2

It is intended that people taking part in the weaving workshop will sign up for the Saturday event too, to help create the dyes and learn about the process but the workshops can be booked separately.

GEORGINA BARNEY is an artist from rural Leicestershire with an interest in the relationship between art and farming. She has collaborated with the agricultural industry on a number of projects including GB Farming (2007), which saw her journey around 14 farms across the British Isles over an eight month period.

A £3 deposit per person must be paid at the time of booking. On completion of the workshop, Loughborough University students will receive the equivalent in loyalty points to spend on purchases in LSU. This deposit is non-refundable if you do not turn up on the day. For non-students the workshop is charged at £3 per person.

Happy Mondays events are organised in collaboration with LSU. Your booking information will be shared with LSU in order for them to process the refund of your deposit in loyalty points. For information on LU Arts privacy policy and how we handle your data, please view our privacy policy..

This event is part of the annual Fruit Routes Harvest programme, organised by the Sustainability team at Loughborough University.
