Overton Poetry Prize Launch: UPROOT by Pnina Shinebourne

Tue 24 April, 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Venue: Martin Hall

Free

In memory of Professor Bill Overton (1946-2012), the School of the Arts, English and Drama at Loughborough University offers the Overton Poetry Prize for a sequence of poems on any subject, up to 300 lines. Each year, the winning entry is published in chapbook form and, as a result, we're pleased to be able to invite you to the official launch of the 2017 prize-winning collection: UPROOT by Pnina Shinebourne.

The judges' comments about the winning poetry:

I felt like I was being introduced to a new world: Pnina is a great story-teller, which is unusual for a poet. Added to this are the striking images that appear in her work. And the combination of English and her mother-tongue is effective and lends a musical tone. The collection is like a long exhalation: complete and expressive. - Helen Calcutt

This is a story that needed telling, and needs reading. The collection includes a wide range of forms, each of which is well-chosen for the part of the story that it tells. The cumulative effect is powerful: a combination of cultural authenticity and personal experience. Some of the emotions are raw, but the writing always does them justice. - Kerry Featherstone

As part of this event, there will be live poetry readings from students and staff, Birmingham-based poet and judge of the competition, Helen Calcutt, and Pnina will launch her chapbook with readings from the work itself. There will be an opportunity for you to purchase signed copies of the pamphlet and a range of creative arts organisations (LU Arts, The Student Wordsmith and Lamplight Press) based here on campus will be present to talk to you about their activities during the refreshment breaks.

This event is FREE to attend and refreshments will be provided throughout the evening.

To book your place, simply register via Eventbrite.

It's sure to be a fantastic evening and we look forward to seeing you there!
