Can Altay's commission for Market Town, Loughborough Records Presents Presence, saw the upper floor of the Market Town Corner undergo a surprising transformation as we entered 2016. With the aim of capturing the 'sound of Loughborough', Can designed a pop-up recording studio that also functioned as a sculptural installation, and invited local musicians from all genres to come and share their sound. The studio was accessible through individual slots and drop-in jam sessions, and provided both the more commonly used instruments and the services of professional sound engineer Robin Chapman.
The sessions took place throughout January and we were delighted with the range of musical talent that came to use the space - everything from indie bands to gospel singers to kirtana musicians to acoustic folk duos. Since the sessions concluded, Robin has been working to produce the final tracks and uploading them to the Loughborough Records Presents Presence SoundCloud account - click here to listen.
The final stages of the project will see the music that has been produced circulated online and the musicians invited to perform live at a special event in Loughborough town centre. Stay tuned (no pun intended) for more updates soon!
