The Makings of a Market Town

Market Town as a project is about the future of Loughborough - what the town might learn, achieve, and gain in the years to come. But time and time again the project and the people involved have proved that the history of the town inescapably informs its present and, by extension, its future.

Ask yourself this: how much do you really know about your home town; why it was founded and by whom, what industries it has thrived on, why that road has a funny name? In attempting to shape the future of Loughborough, we are following in the footsteps of the great leaders, inspirational thinkers, and countless people just like you and I who also wanted to see the town flourish. So, as we look forward in hope throughout Market Town, we also wanted to look back in celebration.

To this end, we commissioned writer, writing coach, and freelance educator Alison Mott to compile for us a history of Loughborough highlighting some of the elements of the rich history that have helped make it the place it is today. Alison is one of the two key figures behind the Loughborough, History and Heritage Network, a collaboration between Charnwood Museum and Loughborough University's Politics, History and International Relations department dedicated to celebrating, discussing, and sharing the history and heritage of the town . She has brought her considerable local knowledge and writing expertise to the Market Town project, and now we are delighted to share it with you!
