Ferenc Gróf
GBP Camouflage (2017)

This commission focused on the artist’s preoccupation with graphic visual identity and currency. For For & Against, Ferenc Gróf created an alphabet made up of currency symbols from around the world. Currency Alphabet has letters substituted with currency signs that bear some resemblance to their original forms. Whilst hard to read it isn’t impossible, particularly when used to create a series of slogan posters that utilise the colour scheme of the recently re-configured British £5 note.

Ferenc made a series of bank notes to accompany the other graphic materials. In total 20,000 were printed and distributed widely throughout Pamphlet Day! The bank note’s scale and familiar colour scheme were far more disruptive than discrete.

Finally, for his political pamphlet Ferenc used the currency alphabet to re-present a historic text, A Modest Proposal, by Dr Jonathan Swift. The full text is available here.
