Public Domestic Symposium

At the end of April Emma curated a one day symposium in which leading artists, researchers, academics and professionals in the field of art and anthropology came together to discuss the crossovers and distinctions within these two areas of inquiry and to further expand on the issues and ideas addressed in her project, Public Domestic: Lessons on Living.

The morning session considered the public implications of private actions, reflecting upon the domestic as a site of agency and habitual behaviours of the home as acts of protest. The afternoon session discussed the ethics and methodologies of making the private public, through the practices of visual anthropology, verbatim theatre and participatory practices.

Speakers included:

Sarah Pink Professor of Design (Media Ethnography) RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia;  Christian Nyampeta MPhil/PhD candidate at the Visual Cultures Department of Goldsmiths, University of London;  Amanda Ravetz Research Fellow at Manchester School of Arts;  Mimi Poskitt, Artistic Director of the documentary theatre company, Look Left Look Right;  Kerstin Leder Mackley,  Research Associate  on the RCUK-funded LEEDR project;  Emma Smith  artist based in London
