Questions of Value
Questions of Value has arisen out of research being undertaken by the University’s Politicized Practice research group around concepts of value, in which they are examining, through critical debate and discussion how it is applied to the fields of economy, society and culture.
The programme has focused on economic value and value in relation to labour. We have invited Marianne Heier to develop a new work in relation to economy and Maria Pask in relation to labour. Alongside these commissions we organised a major symposium ‘ Making Something from Nothing’ which addressed how some recent artistic practices seem to be interested in interrogating the nature of labour, and artistic labour in particular, placing certain activities, such as printmaking and ceramics for example, in proximity to those Marx would have spoken of as 'reproductive labour', and also to what more recently has also been defined as 'affective' labour. A recording of the symposium can be viewed here and here.
